Emanuel is 3 years old and became an internal resident of the Hogar in 2024, when he was only one year and three months old. He arrived together with his sister Mackenzie. Before coming to the Hogar, Emanuel and his siblings were living with their mother, who was unable to provide the care they needed. Because their rights were being affected, the Procuraduría General de la Nación (PGN) intervened and referred them to the Hogar.
When Emanuel first arrived, he was not yet walking and moved primarily by crawling. The staff also noticed an abnormality affecting the entire left side of his body, so he was taken to Hospital General San Juan de Dios for a neurological evaluation. He was diagnosed with hemiplegia, a neurological condition that causes paralysis affecting one side of the body.
Since then, Emanuel has received specialized support to help him develop his abilities and mobility. He currently receives special education, occupational education through AIREX, and physical therapy at FUNDABIEM. He was also referred to orthopedics, where he received an articulated AFO to provide support and control for his ankle and foot, helping him achieve a more natural movement while walking.
Today, Emanuel is a joyful and outgoing little boy who loves to smile and play ball. He has also developed a very special bond with his youngest sister. Since she joined the Hogar, Emanuel loves caring for her and playing with her, proudly taking on the role of big brother. His progress is a reminder of the importance of providing children with the right care, support, and opportunities to reach their potential.
